The Lafayette County Tractor Cruise began in 2007 and is held the second Saturday in July in conjunction with the annual Mayview Picnic. In 2006, Harvey Jungerman had read a magazine article about a tractor cruise done in another area and shared his idea.Immediately, Mark Malott was on board with Harvey's idea. With the help and support from Alfred Riekhof, Dale Wheeler, Ronnie Bertz, and Jeff Sanders, the Mayview Lions Club started what is now known as the Lafayette County Tractor Cruise. We have since lost Mark, Alfred, Dale, Ronnie, and Jeff, but the dream lives on through Harvey, the Mayview Lions Club, all of the participants and sponsors. Members of the Mayview Lions Club help by obtaining business sponsors and making sure the tractor cruise participants are provided lunch, including a piece of homemade pie for dessert. The Lafayette County Tractor Cruise has around 70 sponsors, mostly from businesses, but some individuals as well. Each tractor driver pays a tractor entry fee and is provided with a t-shirt and lunch. Each year the t-shirts feature a local tractor on the front and all the names of the sponsors on the back. A brochure is produced with ads from each sponsor and given to each driver and sponsor and many more. A banner is hung in the yard of the Community Building with all sponsors as well. The tractor cruise route is around 40 miles round trip, stopping for two breaks and lunch along the way. The Lafayette County Tractor Cruise has drivers who have never missed, making this their 16th tractor cruise. The tractor cruise has never missed a year, with the exception of 2020. The tractor cruise has had over 70 drivers ranging in age from 16 years to nearly 100 years old. The weather in Missouri can be perfect, extremely hot, cold, or rainy in July and most of the tractors are antiques so very few cabs with air conditioning or heaters. However, the tractor cruise and its participants persevere. The hope is to continue with this tradition of Lafayette County Tractor Cruise for many years to come with the help and support of the Mayview Lions Club, the tractor cruise participants, sponsors, and community. The proceeds from the Lafayette County Tractor Cruise benefit local projects, disasters, and charities for both the visually and hearing impaired locally and across the globe.
