Marvin served in the United States Army's 2nd Missile Command from 1958 to 1960, earning the Good Conduct Award. His service took him to Missouri, Colorado, and Texas, where he was stationed at the same base as Elvis Presley. Marvin began his career at Kansas City Fire & Marine before moving to Tension Envelope Corporation in Kansas City. He dedicated 34 years to Tension Envelope, retiring as System Operations Manager in 2002. During his tenure, he also served as a United Way coordinator. Joyce worked at BMA in Kansas City, then in advertising for the Kansas City Star and Rothschild Department Store, before retiring from Automatic Data Processing in 2006 as a Senior Client Trainer.
Together the Schemmers have been avid square dancers for over 50 years, actively participating in two square dance clubs where they have held various offices, including president, secretary, and treasurer. They have attended 20 National Square Dance Conventions and in 2018 served as the vice finance chair when it was held in Kansas City. The couple enjoys square dancing together several times a week.
Marvin and Joyce have a passion for tractors and are members of both the Mid Missouri Tractor Club and the Missouri State Allis-Chalmers Tractor Club where they participate in events and parades. The Schemmer family received 1st place for their tractor and family float in the 2022 Mayview Picnic Parade. They are also members of the Square Wheels RV Club where they enjoy camping and traveling. Marvin has also served as a Boy Scout Leader for several years.

Marvin and Joyce have significantly contributed to their community, playing integral roles in organizing, hosting, and volunteering in countless events such as the Mayview All School Reunion, Mayview Lions Club Annual Lafayette County Tractor Cruise, and the Lafayette County Clean Up Day, just to name a few.
The Schemmers have two children, Marvin Duane Schemmer and his wife Vicki, and Robin Ann Falk and her fiancée Phil Vaughan.
